Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups milk
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 2 cups grated cheese (mozzarella and fresh cheese of choice)
- 2 cups precooked cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine precooked cornmeal and salt.
- Gradually add milk, stirring continuously until a dough forms.
- Stir in melted butter until fully incorporated.
- Add grated cheese and mix until evenly distributed. Dough should be a shaggy, round ball.
- Let dough rest for 5 minutes to absorb the liquid.
- Divide dough into 8 equal portions and shape each into a ball.
- Flatten each ball into a ½-inch thick disc.
- Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Cook arepas for 5-7 minutes per side, until golden brown and fully cooked through.
- Serve hot with additional butter or cheese, alongside hot chocolate.
