Ingredients
  • 2 ½ cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 cups grated cheese (mozzarella and fresh cheese of choice)
  • 2 cups precooked cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine precooked cornmeal and salt.
  2. Gradually add milk, stirring continuously until a dough forms.
  3. Stir in melted butter until fully incorporated.
  4. Add grated cheese and mix until evenly distributed. Dough should be a shaggy, round ball.
  5. Let dough rest for 5 minutes to absorb the liquid.
  6. Divide dough into 8 equal portions and shape each into a ball.
  7. Flatten each ball into a ½-inch thick disc.
  8. Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  9. Cook arepas for 5-7 minutes per side, until golden brown and fully cooked through.
  10. Serve hot with additional butter or cheese, alongside hot chocolate.
